Balut – It’s a common exotic foods or street
foods in Philippines. It is a boiled fertilized duck egg with 10 to 18 days
old. Not so taste good for the first time but you will get addicted to it when
you used to. Balut is commonly sold during night time; it should be fresh and
hot when selling it. The better when its hot because the taste is different
from the one that is not. Why is it considered as exotic? For some, its kind of
gross foods. When you eat it you can see how the how the embryo looks like.

Sea Urchin - A sea creature that looks like a porcupine and
it is covered with long and short pines to protect against predator. There are
two different sea urchins that is considered as one of the exotic foods in
Philippines. One that has long pines with color black features and the other
one which has the short pines with colorful body. It is exotic in the sense
that, people are eating it alive or they are not cooking it. It tastes good,
sweet and sour when it melts inside your mouth. Other used it as their viand
and best to eat when you are on the sea shore.

Tamilok – Not a usually living creature that you
can see around, this kind of living organisms can be found in every rotten wood
or bakawan or mangroves in Palawan. Not a typical foods that you might try, it
is literally a worm. The right term of it is “wood worm mollusk”. It is considered
as exotic because you don’t need to cook when you eat it. You just need a
vinegar and salt and it is good to go.

Betute – We are familiar with the frogs? Of course
we did, this is common animals that we can find around. But maybe you never
heard of any restaurant or foods chain having a menu of it? Betute is a
kapampangan Specialty; it is a deep fried farm frogs minced with garlic and
spices. The taste is good, it is crispy and crunchy and it taste like chicken. Try

Ginataang Kuhol – This one is incredibly
unbelievable, but we have to believe it. Kuhol is usually found in every rice
field. They are living underneath the water and mud. Famers consider as pest in
their farm, it slowly destroys the growth plants and it can affect the
production of rice fields. However, for some they consider it as food and known
to be the blockbuster Pinoy Delicacy in town. It is cooked in coconut milk with
different spices.
