The shrine is free to visit. It is best to bring essentials such as drinking water, an umbrella, and comfortable footwear. Visitors with a private car or motorcycle can travel directly to the area. Motorcycle taxis, locally called habal-habal, are also available for travelers going uphill.
During our visit, we left Dumaguete early in the morning and arrived in Simala after around three hours of travel. The journey was long, but the peaceful atmosphere of the shrine made it worthwhile.
Many visitors come not only to admire the European-inspired architecture and mountain setting, but also to pray. Inside the shrine, people patiently line up to visit the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the center of the church.
The shrine also displays letters and testimonies from people who believe their prayers were answered. Visitors can also see statues of saints and different representations of Mother Mary from around the world.
