Puncak Tanawan: A Scenic Hiking Destination in Sibulan, Negros Oriental

Puncak Tanawan is a scenic mountain destination in Sibulan, Negros Oriental, near Dumaguete City. The name Tanawan comes from the local word tan-aw, which means “to view” or “viewing place.” True to its name, Puncak Tanawan offers a wide and breathtaking view of the city, mountains, and surrounding landscape below.

It is a wonderful place to make memories, take photos, and spend time with friends. For people who are new to hiking or trail adventures, Puncak Tanawan can be a good starting point. The journey may be tiring, but reaching the top gives visitors a rewarding view and a peaceful connection with nature.

Puncak Tanawan has long been a place where hikers and mountain climbers enjoy the outdoors. In the past, it was a quiet area with only one house on top. The caretaker and landowner maintained the green grasses and plants around the area. For some climbers, it was also a place to pitch tents and wait for the sunrise.

Watching the sunrise at Puncak Tanawan is a memorable experience. The cold mountain breeze, warm sunlight, and open view create a peaceful atmosphere that makes visitors appreciate the beauty of Negros Oriental.

At the top, visitors can sit or lie down on the green Bermuda grass while enjoying the view. From the hilltop, you can look over the city, breathe fresh air, and take a break from the busy routine below.

The hike usually takes around one and a half hours, depending on your pace and starting point. The path follows a small road that gradually leads uphill. Before beginning the hike, visitors may need to register in a logbook at the station where cars and motorcycles can be parked.

Along the way, you may pass small houses and local vendors selling water and food. The people in the area are often friendly and willing to help visitors with directions or questions.

For those who prefer not to walk, motorcycle rides known as habal-habal may be available. Based on my previous visit, the fare was around ₱50 going up and ₱50 going back. Rates and availability may change, so ask locally before starting your trip.

At the summit, there are areas where visitors can rest and put down their belongings. A nearby house may offer food, water, and hot coffee for purchase. It is best to bring enough drinking water, snacks, sun protection, and proper footwear for the hike.
