M/V Guimaras (Julien’s Wreck): Sipalay’s Shallow Shipwreck Adventure

Not every shipwreck requires a deep dive to be unforgettable. Near the southern coast of Negros Occidental, M/V Guimaras—better known as Julien’s Wreck—offers a rare chance to explore a sunken merchant vessel in relatively shallow water. Located about three kilometers from Punta Bulata, this underwater site is one of the most interesting snorkeling and diving attractions near Sipalay and Cauayan.

The M/V Guimaras was a merchant ship of Compania Maritima that ended up on a reef, although the exact reason for its sinking remains uncertain. Some accounts suggest it ran aground, while others mention a possible seaquake. Whatever happened, the vessel has since become part of the sea itself—transformed by coral growth, schools of fish, and the constant movement of the tide.

A Wreck You Can See in Shallow Water

One reason Julien’s Wreck stands out is its accessible depth. The main wreck area lies around six to seven meters below the surface, while nearby waters may reach approximately 10 to 15 meters. At low tide, some sections may even be close enough to see from a boat.

This makes the site appealing not only to certified scuba divers but also to confident snorkelers joining a guided boat trip. Instead of descending into a dark, deep wreck, visitors can experience a bright tropical setting where sunlight reaches the corals and fish surrounding the structure.

The ship is no longer intact. It has broken into separate sections over time, creating a more interesting underwater landscape to explore with an experienced local guide. Colorful corals now cover much of the wreck, while fish move through openings, around steel surfaces, and above the former vessel.

A Different Side of Sipalay Travel

Sipalay is known for beaches and island views, but Julien’s Wreck adds a more adventurous side to a coastal itinerary. A visit can fit well into a day that includes snorkeling, swimming, island hopping, or simply relaxing along the shores near Punta Bulata and Elihan.

Most visits take around one to two hours, depending on weather, tide, current, and the activity you choose. Conditions at sea can change quickly, so travelers should use a reputable boat or dive operator, wear proper safety gear, and follow local marine-protection rules. Confirm current access requirements, fees, and weather conditions before leaving shore.

Where to Stay Near Julien’s Wreck

For travelers looking for a more affordable place to stay near the attraction, Yena’s Inn in Elihan, Cauayan is a practical base. Its location makes it convenient for visitors planning to explore the beaches, dive sites, and marine attractions around Punta Bulata and southern Negros Occidental.

M/V Guimaras, or Julien’s Wreck, is more than a sunken ship. It is a living reef, a piece of local maritime mystery, and one of the most unique underwater experiences near Sipalay.
